JAMMU, July 11: Tributes were paid to Madr-e-Meharban Begum Akbar Jehan on her death anniversary at a solemn memorial meeting, organized by Satwant Kour Dogra, Provincial president Women Wing at party headquarters Sher-e-Kashmir Bhavan, with senior leaders recalling her immense contribution towards socio-economic transformation and political empowerment of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Leading the leaders and workers in paying homage, the Women Wing Provincial president recalled historic role of Begum Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah during the political movement of Jammu and Kashmir and thereafter, saying she carried forward the mission of Sher-e-Kashmir to realise a dignified place for the people and ensuring their empowerment.
Satwant Kour Dogra made a particular reference to the role the Begum played during the imprisonment of Sheikh Abdullah and said she kept the spirit of people live and infused energy to them. “Whenever historians will write on Sher-e-Kashmir, they cannot afford to ignore Madr-e-Meharban, as the persona of the tallest among the towering leaders of the time was incomplete without this great lady”, she said.
She said the people of Jammu and Kashmir will always remain indebted to Madr-e-Meharban for keeping the great mission of Sher-e-Kashmir alive during his long spell of imprisonment.
Describing her contribution in promotion of female literacy and empowerment of weaker sections of the society as exemplary, she added that her life has been an example of selfless service to poor and needy.
Prominent among those, who paid tributes to the Madr-e-Meharban, included Manveer Kour, Veena Oberai, Daljeet Sharma, Agya Kour, Rashida Begum, Dilshad Begum, Pinki Bhat, Komal Manhas, Soma Devi, Chanchala, Veena, Jyoti, Rekha Langeh, Bahno Devi and others.
