NC exploited Srinagar for political interests: Baig

SRINAGAR, May 5: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) today said the historic city of Srinagar needs futuristic , heritage sensitive and modern vision for its composite development. Unfortunately till now all the so called master plans have resulted in destroying its historical image and creation of more problems than any solutions for its increasing population and expanding dimensions.
This was stated by senior party leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Hussain Baig while addressing the party card holders from Amirakadal constituency.
Baig said during PDP- Congress regime land mark initiatives were taken for providing the city with more open and beautifying spaces, amenities were improved to some extent and a better civic sense had developed among the citizens as a result of participatory governance initiated by Mufti Mohammed Sayeed’s administration. He said where ever there had been encroachments or illegal constructions people had voluntarily removed them in order to beautify the city. PDP has very practical and fast track plans to convert this capital into a city where commuters enjoy better drives and residents have amenities of power, sanitation, water and recreation.
Baig said NC had only exploited Srinagar for its political interests. It has failed to provide even basic amenities to the people, while the claims of development have remained confined to papers. The money earmarked for works has gone into the pockets of rulling politicians , their relatives and agents.
Baig said the decades old rule of NC had rendered Srinagar without a democratic voice and whereas rest of the State had achieved the democratic option of choosing their representatives, the boycott politics was promoted by the ruling party to benefit from.
Speaking on the occasion, party general secretary Dilawar Mir said that on the one hand NC sold out water and power resources to stay in power and on the other hand it is doling out lights as if these are given from the huge personal assets of NC rulers”. He said it was a pity that even after ruling the State for nearly five decades the discourse of development under NC had not gone beyond street lights which hardly ever have power, lanes, drains and menial jobs.
Taking a dig at the Govt propaganda about its achievements during the last four years senior party leader and former Finance Minister Tariq Hameed Karra said paper claims for development of Srinagar city was ridiculous and is not just funny but it rubs salt on the wounds of the people of Srinagar . They treat people as fools which has been NC’s historical tactics.
Karra said his PDP would not even lay claim on projects like Sangarmal or the number of sewage treatment plants that were constructed during the PDP-Congress regime and have now found place in the list of achievements of the present NC led Government. He said the PDP believes that Srinagar and its residents deserve much better facilities at par with the most modern cities around the world and construction of a shopping facility or sewage treatment plants even if they were constructed in its tenure would not qualify as outstanding achievements.
