Sir,
Nature has unleashed its fury in the form of heavy rain in Tamil Nadu resulting in floods breaking a record of hundred years.Chennai and coastal areas of Tamil Nadu remained marooned due to heavy rains pounding the State affecting about fifty lakh people in the State.Huge loss of property was also reported. With the weather improving, life is limping back to normality but there is fear of an epidemic engulfing the affected regions. Thus, the need of the hour is to undertake massive relief operations and take measures to prevent disease and death after the recession of floods. This situation reminds us of heavy floods which affected Kashmir in 2014 and caused heavy loss of life and property.Though the Union Government has announced liberal aid and despatched rescue teams of NDRF, Navy, Army personnel and police personnel to carry out relief and rescue operations. The floods have wrecked havoc with the result that airports and Railway Stations remained submerged under water for days together throwing life out of gear.Consequently, the railway and air operations had to be suspended for some days. Moreover about three hundred people are reported to have lost their lives due to floods triggered by heavy rains. Many essential services like banking, electricity, ATM fuel etc remained paralysed.
Such a situation calls for active participation of NGOs,public to come forward and help liberally by making donations to the PM’s National Relief Fund or CM’s Relief Fund so that affected people can be provided succour and relief and they can build their ravaged property again. Moreover, people need to realize that it is not wise to fiddle with Nature to such an extent the Nature is compelled to unleash her fury to teach man that enough is enough.Already, the effects of climatic changes are visible in the form of rise in temperature and less snow on Gangotri and unless man learns to live in harmony with Nature, more such disasters may follow. The Government too ought to take measures to ensure that the rain water or excess water from reservoirs/ water bodies is discharged in such a manner that it doesnot flood the residential and other areas putting the life of the residents at stake.
Yours etc…
