JAMMU, May 19: Natrang in its Sunday Theatre Series presented English play ‘Great Expectations’ which is based on the novel by Charles Dickens with the same name.
The play was adapted and directed by Aarushi Thakur who is a post graduate in International politics from University of Leicester, UK and a trained actor from Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, London.
The play presents a very vivid picture of the early Victorian era and the progress of ‘Pip’ from childhood through often painful experiences to adulthood. He encounters various people in this journey and few become a part of his life leaving a dramatic impact on him. He meets Miss Havisham who is locked up with her unhappy past with a broken heart. He also meets the love of his life, Estella who never acknowledges that she is capable of love, thus escapes any commitment. In this journey Pip discovers his true self and his values. In the end Estella realizes and identifies her true self with Pip irrespective of her teachings that have always taught her to be arrogant and heartless. The play ends with a twist in the original story written by Dickens; Estella leaves her fiancée who is the wealthiest man in England to marry Pip.
