He is interested in how this title has been given in history to people for their exceptional talent while also referring to the colour of their skin (Pele and Joesephine Baker are the most widely known examples). In Kochi, Kerela La Perle Noire was a 16th Century European Dandy, in Havana La Perla Negra was dressed as a 1950s American woman in an elegant dress, with pearl strings and white stockings. Both these performances involved being imprisoned, making drawings and eventually escaping from my shackles and disappearing into the river and sea.
