JAMMU, Mar 27: Natrang celebrated World Theatre Day at Natrang Studio Theatre with a seminar entitled ‘Theatre Today’ which featured a presentation by Padamshree Balwant Thakur covering the status of theatre in the world.
At the very outset Balwant Thakur gave a brief about the significance and the history of the celebrations of World Theatre Day. He informed that World Theatre Day was initiated in 1961 by the International Theatre Institute (ITI) UNESCO, Paris.
“In Jammu, Natrang started these celebrations in the year 1985 with a seminar at Abhinav Theatre entitled ‘What is to be done’ and celebrates this day every year since then and at majority of occasion it presented its highly celebrated plays of the year”, he added.
Terming Theatre as the only tool of shaping civilized societies, Balwant Thakur stressed on the need of introducing this magnificent art in all the educational institutions. “In the developed world, theatre has acquired position and is considered as one of the most sought-after activity of community participation and intellectual development”, he added.
Balwant further said that for Jammu, the celebration this year has acquired greater importance as this year Theatre Olympics are also being held in Jammu. He said that the dedicated efforts of Jammu theatre artists have taken the theatre art of this place to the global heights. “Today Jammu is being considered as one of the major theatre centre of India and all has been possible because of the earnest efforts of the dedicated theatre artists”, he added.
