JAMMU, Dec 19: Two-day national symposium on “Emerging trends in Plant Pathology” and North Zone Meet of the Indian Society of Mycology and Plant Pathology, was inaugurated today at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu, at its main campus, Chatha.
The inauguration was made by Dr. B.L. Jalali, an eminent plant pathologist of the country and former Director Research, Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar.
He underscored importance of plant disease management strategies like gene cloning, recombinant DNA technology and other biotechnological and molecular modules to minimize the crop losses due to existing and new emerging diseases in the light of global climate change. He also suggested carrying out research in the field of integrated disease management and mycological taxonomy.
Prof. D. K. Arora, Vice- Chancellor of SKUAST-J emphasized the need to work on Genomics of Host Parasite interaction, molecular diagnostics, gene silencing, meta-genomics, etc to solve the problems pertaining to plant diseases.
At the outset, Dr. V. K Razdan, Prof. & Head, Division of Plant Pathology, SKUAST-J and convener of the symposium, presented the welcome address.
Speaking on this occasion, Dr. R.P. Thakur highlighted the importance of the Society of Mycology and Plant Pathology and its contribution in the field of plant protection at national and international level.
To interact and understand the trends in plant diseases and scientific advancement made in the disease management, molecular diagnostics, biotechnology, microbial diversity and its utilization, number of scientists of national and international repute participated in the Conference.
During the daylong deliberations, eminent speakers took stock of present status of plant pathology and generated newer ideas in modern plant pathology for management of plant diseases.
Dr. Sachin Gupta, oganizing scretary presented vote of thanks in the concluding session of the day long deliberation.
