JAMMU, Mar 24: Two day long national seminar on “Feminist Transitions” organised by School of Languages and Literature and Gender Sensitization Committee against Sexual Harassment, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) commenced today.
Vice Chancellor of the University Prof Sudhir K Jain inaugurated the seminar.
In his inaugural address, Prof Jain highlighted the significance of feminism and need of sensitization in society and traced the development of the marginalization of women in society.
The keynote speaker Prof Manju Jaidka from Punjab University Chandigarh and Chairperson Chandigarh Sahitya Akademi underscored that there is no single ideology or set of rules that may be labelled as feminism, each person has a different concept of what feminism comprises. Besides, the movement is forever in transit and cannot be fixed in a formulated phrase and what is needed is re-visioning.
Academics and scholars from across the country are participating in the seminar prominent among them are Prof Harish Narang from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Prof Anita Singh from Banaras Hindu University, Prof Sanjoy Saksena from Allahabad University, Dr Neeraja Gupta from Bharati Vidhya Bhavan Ahmedabad, Dr Roshan Sharma from the Central University of Himachal Pradesh.
The seminar will engage with feminist perspectives on a wide range of social, cultural, theoretical and global transitions that have affected or modified feminisms identity, representation, activism and politics in the 21st century.
As part of the seminar an exhibition on an artistic representation on Feminism by a young budding artist of Jammu Agrima Malhotra was also inaugurated.
On the occasion, a conference souvenir was also released.
Prof VK Bhat, Dean Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is the chairperson of the seminar.
The coordinator of the seminar, Dr Vandana Sharma, Director School of Languages and Literature said that the seminar has been designed to be multidisciplinary to have discussions and deliberations not only on feminist discourse but also on everyday feminism which is a very empowering framework in this age of cyber-feminism and techno-feminism.
