National parties don’t think of regional aspirations: Mehbooba

Excelsior Correspondent
Srinagar, Apr 22: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti today said that national parties are more interested in national interest and they don’t usually think of regional aspirations.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a party rally in Kulgam district of South Kashmir, the PDP president said: “The main aim of this election is the defense of Article 370 and the resolution of Kashmir issue. The national parties are more interested in national interest, they don’t usually think of regional aspiration”, said Mehbooba.
The PDP president said that Congress thought hanging of Afzal Guru and transfer of land to Amarnath Shrine Board is in the national interest without caring for the interests of Kashmiris. “Like Ghulam Nabi Azad, when he was the Chief Minister, transferred land to the Amaranth Shrine Board, or Afzal Guru was hanged, they thought that it was in the national interest. They did not think of emotions of Kashmiri people. Azad sahib did not think of Article 370 when the land was transferred.

Mehbooba said that this election is related to finding ways to defend special status of Jammu and Kashmir in Parliament. “This election is meant to find ways to defend the special status of J&K in the Parliament. The identity and special status of the Jammu and Kashmir is directly linked to the ongoing parliamentary elections in the State”, she said.
The PDP president said that India and Pakistan should work for peace and resolution of the issues as both are nuclear countries.”Pakistan has not kept nuclear weapons for Eid, if India has not kept those for Diwali”, she said.
“People of Kashmir have seen everything. From task force to the POTA, everything. The ultimate way is the way of dialogue. They have to talk to the Hurriyat, and they have to talk to Pakistan”, she said.
On the burning of cash in a truck in South Kashmir ahead of polls, PDP president said that Election Commission of India should look into the matter of money being distributed in Kashmir.
Mehbooba warned police that if the relations of a militant killed long back are not released; more youth would pick up the gun and the situation could resultantly become vulnerable.
Addressing an election rally at Waripora Kulgam, Mehbooba said: “Relations of a slain militant detained by police should be released immediately as otherwise more youth would pick up guns and the situation could become more vulnerable for the Government.”
“What for the relations of a slain militant are being detained?” she asked.
Hitting out at BJP president Amit Shah for reiterating his party’s stand to scrap Article 370, the PDP president warned that any such offensive measures would sever ties of Jammu and Kashmir and its accession with the union of India.
