National conference on BCPC-2016 begins at JU

JAMMU, Mar 9: A two-day National conference on “Biodiversity Conservation and Pollution Control- Challenges and Strategies (BCPC-2016)”, under UGC SAP programme of Department of Environmental Sciences, began today at Jammu University.
In the inaugural session, Prof Y R Malhotra, former Vice Chancellor, JU was chief guest while Prof A Mohandas, Emeritus Professor, National Center for Aquatic Animal Health, Cochin University of Science and Technology and Prof A P Das, North Bengal University, Siliguri, were the guests of honour. Prof R D Sharma, Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu, presided over the function.
Prof A P Das   emphasized upon the importance of Biodiversity contained in all the ecosystems and urged upon the public and managers in particular to work for its effective conservation and management.
Prof R D Sharma, in his presidential address, hoped that the conference will provide a platform to the participants to deliberate on the issues and the proceedings of the conference and recommendations thereof shall highly benefit the young researchers in exploring the modern innovative modes of research and also be useful for policy makers in adopting sustainable ways to achieve economic development.
Prof Y R Malhotra   stressed upon the audience to resort to sustainable way of living by ensuring judicious use of natural resources and adopt to minimum wastage and maximum recycling.
Earlier, Prof Anil K Raina, Convener of the conference and Head, Department of Environmental Sciences,   introduced the conference theme and the thrust areas of the two days event. A total of 130 papers in nine different categories have been received from the researchers and scientists across the nation, he added.
Green Campus Task Force, University of Jammu, constituted by Vice Chancellor, was formally introduced by Dr Deepika Slathia, Member secretary, GCTF-JU.
On the first day, three technical sessions were held with 25 oral presentations on the themes of Biodiversity conservation and management, environmental pollution, monitoring modelling and management. Plenary lectures were delivered by Prof S P S Kushwaha, Dr Rakesh Bharghav, Prof A P Das and Dr C M Seth.
