JAMMU, Mar 22: International Centre for Cross -Culture Research and Human Resource Management University of Jammu organized a one day National Conclave on “Composite Culture Management”, as a prelude to the launch of 1- year PG Diploma, here today.
JU Vice Chancellor Prof M P S Ishar, who was chief guest during the inaugural session, congratulated the International Centre for taking such an initiative which he termed as a step in the right direction. He also appreciated Prof. Neelu Rohmetra for inviting renowned speakers in the area representing premier institutions in the country.
Prof Neharika Vohra, from IIM-Ahmedabad, a highly acknowledged researcher in the area of cross cultural management and organization behavior, delivered presentation on “Managing Large and Complex Systems: Lessons from India”. She suggested that economies of BRIC countries are growing better than the economies of G7 countries. She described culture as diverse, chaotic, unpredictable, ever-changing, politically unstable and happening. She gave an example of ODDUPY, a restaurant which has more than 30,000 branches as compared to the McDonald’s which has only 5,000 branches. She also threw light on the cultural diversity of India.
Prof Anup Singh from Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida, spoke about the ” Unity in Diversity”. He suggested that diversity is the mosaic of the people who bring a variety of background , styles and cultures. Adding further he talked about the primary and secondary dimensions of diversity.
Prof Karuna Chanana, a sociologist from JNU, New Delhi , talked about the cultural diversity with special reference to JNU culture wherein students from different cultures assimilate and behave in unison. She cited example of old Indian cities like Bombay, Calcutta and Madras where cultural accommodation existed. She also touched upon the gender issues in diversity management.
Prof. Purnima Singh, a cross-cultural Psychologist from IIT Delhi, spoke about “Making Sense of Culture And Diversity”. She shared what is culture and explained that “culture is a framework of behavioural patterns , values, assumptions, meaning and experience shared by social groups”. She dwelt upon both the tangible and intangible aspects of culture. She reflected that culture can result in convergence and divergence, and can be source of competitive advantage. She shared the example of Walt Disney, which faced the failure in France because of non consideration of cultural variables.
Earlier while welcoming the guests Prof Neelu Rohmetra traced the growth of the International Centre since its inception in 2008, which she termed as decent. According to her culturally intelligent management and culturally intelligent workforce, culminating to ‘Composite Culture Management’ define the business today. Consequently, the leading B-Schools around the world are now training their students around building cross-culture competence and preparing them for future workplaces. She detailed the various aspects of one – year PG diploma in ‘Composite Culture Management’ to be offered shortly.
Prof Neelam Saraf in her presidential remarks, congratulated the International Centre for this initiative and hoped that the Course shall be well received by the youth of the region as an add-on opportunity.
In the post-lunch Session, four presentations were delivered. The panel was chaired by Prof Dipankar Sengupta, HoD, Department of Economics, JU and Prof B C Sharma Dean Student Placements, JU. The presentation was made by the Ph D students who talked about ‘Culture of Inclusivity’, ‘Composite Culture of Jammu and Kashmir’, ‘Cultural Intelligence’ and ‘Cultural Identity’. Isha Sharma and Neha Gupta presented. vote of thanks while Dr Anil Gupta conducted the entire proceedings.
The post lunch session was followed by an Open House in which the students spoke about their understanding about the culture, diversity and organizations. The session was participatory in nature and was chaired by Prof. Purnima Singh, Prof Anup K Singh and Prof Neelu Rohmetra.
The Conclave was attended by the faculty and the officials of the University of Jammu. Prominent among them included Prof Naresh Padha, Registrar, Prof Manoj Dhar, Controller of Examinations, Prof N K Tripathi, Dean Students Welfare, Prof J P Singh Joorel, President JUTA, Prof V D Singh, Director,DDE , Dr D L Choudhary , Prof GM Bhat, HoD Geology, Prof Dhain Singh, Jai Kumar Sharma, Prof Abha Chauhan , HoD Sociology, Prof Suman Jamwal, HoD History and Dr Daud Iqbal Baba, Coordinator Campuses.
Pertinent to mention here that about 170 students and research scholars responded to the open invitation for the Conclave on ‘Composite Culture Management’ and registered for the same. On the occasion the information Brochure of the ICccR & HRM containing the details of the academic programmes was also released.
