JAMMU, Sept 9: Senior Joint Replacement Surgeon, Dr Vikas Padha from Narayana Super Specialty Hospital, Katra successfully performed total knee replacement surgery on two cancer survivors.
The Oncology team led by Dr Rajeev Saini, Senior Consultant – Medical Oncology at the Hospital had also provided successful Cancer treatment to both these patients in the recent past. One of the patients was a 62 year old female diagnosed with stage 2 ovarian Cancer. She had been successfully operated upon two years back followed by chemotherapy and was on follow-up since the last two years. The second patient was a 56 year old female diagnosed with Grade 2 Neuroendocrine Tumour in November 2021. She had undergone endoscopic resection of the tumour followed by hormonal therapy since the last one year resulting in complete remission. Both the patients were suffering from Advanced Osteoarthritis of the knees that had crippled their lives and needed total knee replacement surgery to make them walk comfortably again.
“Looking at the complexities involved in performing total knee replacement surgery in such patients who have recently received Cancer treatment, thorough discussion was done with the Oncology and Anesthesia team at the Hospital. Patients were thoroughly investigated before taking the decision of going ahead with the surgery” said Dr Vikas Padha who has performed hundreds of successful total knee replacement surgeries at Narayana. Attendants were informed about the risks and complexities involved in this case for which they agreed.
Both the surgeries conducted under Regional Anesthesia went smoothly and patients were kept in the ICU for close monitoring in the post-operative period.
Patients were made to walk on the very first post-operative day and were discharged on 5th day post-surgery. With continuous physiotherapy, both patients started walking comfortably without support, a month after the surgery. “Both the patients are walking normally without any discomfort and function of the knees including knee bending is perfect.
The patients and their attendants are satisfied seeing the outcome of total knee replacement surgery” informed Dr Vikas Padha who added that achieving successful outcomes in total knee replacement surgeries in complex cases like Cancer survivors is the result of teamwork of various specialties.
Dr JP Singh, Clinical Director at Narayana Super Specialty Hospital, Katra said that it is a matter of immense satisfaction that both the patients not only got successful Cancer treatment at the hospital but also got rid of their knee pain which had almost crippled their lives.
M.M.Mathavan, Facility Director at Narayana Super Specialty Hospital, Katra said “Earlier such patients used to go outside Jammu and Kashmir for getting such complex surgeries done but now they are getting such treatment at Narayana Hospital, Katra itself.
