JAMMU, Nov 23: Exhilarating display of Gatka skills (Sikh martial art form), rendering of Shabad Kirtans, carrying of Guru Granth Sahibji on a decorated vehicle and Nishan Sahebans were part of the ‘Nagar Kirtan’ taken out in connection with Prakash Utsav of First Sikh Guru and founder of Sikh religion Guru Nanak Dev Ji, here today.
Thousands of devout Sikhs including women and children drawn from different parts of Jammu city and its outskirts participated in the Nagar Kirtan which was taken out from Gurudwara Yadgar, Chand Nagar. The birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev is falling on November 25 and for the first time, Nagar Kirtan was taken out in the city by Sikh devotees today.
The Nagar Kirtan organized by State Gurudwara Prabhandak Board (SGPB) and District Gurudwara Prabhandak Committee (DGPC), passed through Vinayak Bazar, Dogra Chowk, Tawi Bridge, Bikram Chowk, Asia Crossing, Green Belt Gandhi Nagar, Hospital Road, Gandhi Nagar, Gole Market, Shiva Ji Chowk, Khalsa Chowk and culminated at Gurudwara Singh Sabha Nanak Nagar with Ardas by Sikh Sangat.
The devotees were reciting Bhajan Kirtan, raising slogans in praise of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and were chanting “Jo Boley So Nihal Sat Shri Akaal” enroute.
The Nagar Kirtan started from Gurudwara Yadgar Shri Guru Nanak Devji, Chand Nagar. It was led by Panj Piyaras in traditional religious dress which was followed by Swari of Guru Granth Sahib on a fully decorated open vehicle followed by scores of Jhankis, which were organized by various Sikh Organisations. A large number of people from Hindu community also paid their obeisance to Guru Granth Sahib enroute. The students from different schools also participated in the programme and displayed band skills.
Enlivening display of Gatka skills (Sikh martial art form) by the Sikh youths especially children were highly appreciated by the people participating in the function and others watching the Nagar Kirtan. A large number of devotees were sweeping the road where from the Nagar Kirtan proceeded.
To greet the Nagar Kirtan the people en route had erected welcome gates and raised sign boards. Besides, the stalls serving food stuff by Punjab Sind Bank, JKP and others to participants were also installed at various places by the people to serve the devotees who had taken part in Nagar Kirtan.
The authorities had made elaborate arrangements for the Nagar Kirtan and the traffic was also diverted from the routes where from the Nagar Kirtan was to pass.
Earlier thousands of Sikh devotees assembled at Gurudwara Yadgar Guru Nanak Dev Ji at Chand Nagar where from the Nagar Kirtan was taken out after Ardass.
The Nagar Kirtan was organized under the leadership of Tarlochan Singh Wazir, Chairman, SGPB and Jagjeet Singh Jagga, President, DGPC.
