JAMMU, Jan 18: NABARD Jammu and Kashmir launched the International Year of Millets (IYOM) 2023 here today.
As per a statement, the launching event was graced by KK Sharma, Director Agriculture, Jammu, who is also the Mission Director for IYOM-2023 for Jammu Division.
Dr SK Gupta, Director Extension, SKUAST-Jammu, who is also the Senior Scientist of the varsity, Senior Officers of NABARD, Senior Project Manager, JKRLM, heads of different NGOs working in Jammu besides others also attended the event.
Dr AK Sood, Chief General Manager, NABARD, Jammu and Kashmir Regional office welcomed the dignitaries and apprised them about the campaign of the Union Government aimed at spreading awareness on millets.
He also briefed the house about the rationale behind UN declaring 2023 as International Year of Millets (IYOM) as the world is facing existential crisis of food insecurity and water scarcity.
He also highlighted the importance of millets towards nutrition as well as its contribution towards adaptation side of climate change.
He further mentioned about the role and scope of NABARD towards promotion, production, and value addition of millets in Jammu and Kashmir especially towards popularizing millets amongst farmers.
Dr Sood emphasized on how FPOs can become launching spots for millets as minor produce.
Director Agriculture, Jammu, Dr K K Sharma gave a presentation about the status of millets in J&K and potential areas where millets can be promoted. He mentioned about developing Kishtwar as Model Millet District in Jammu & Kashmir as Kishtwar grows all types of millets including Bajarbhang.
Dr S K Gupta spoke about importance of millets and role of SKUAST in promotion of millets in Jammu & Kashmir.
