Sir,
This has reference to the writeup ‘Myths and Truth about Animal World’ (DE, October 15, 2017). The writeup made an interesting and thought provoking reading. The writer has beautifully exploded the common myths associated with the animal world, such as dancing of the snake in front of the flute, effect of red cloth on the bull, hardness of skin of the elephants, storage of water in the hemp of the camel etc. She has cleared that the snakes do not dance and that they sway their body to defend themselves and that the red cloth has no effect on the bull as bulls are colour blind. So the red colour is as good as blue or yellow. Moreover, she has clearly stated that contrary to the misconception, the skin of the elephant is delicate and sensitive and that camels do not store water in their humps. Then, there are other myths such as howling of dogs, which is said to be a cause of concern as it portends some bad omen but actually dogs howl either because of loud noise or to give their companions the idea of their location. There is another myth that lemmings commit suicide. Actually, many of them may die due to jumping from cliffs or being exhausted due to swimming long distances at the time of migration from one place to another. Similarly, there are other myths associated with the animals which have no scientific basis. Sometimes, in the name of various myths and rituals, many animals are subjected to cruelty and violence.Such myths having no scientific basis ought to be exploded to bring the truth to light.
Yours etc…
