Mutton retailers allege harassment by CAPD Deptt

SRINAGAR, Apr 30: While the Mutton retailers in Srinagar are on indefinite strike from last two days against the alleged Government harassment, they blame the Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) Department for its failure to check the wholesale rate of mutton.
The retailers blamed the department for its failure to control the rates of supply coming from different Mandis, and alleged that instead of checking and controlling the mafia the department has been harassing the retailers.
President, All Kashmir Butchers Union, Khazir Mohammad Rigoo said the union feels that rates are beyond their control as it is the wholesalers who define the end rate of mutton.
He said the strike is in protest against the alleged harassment of mutton sellers by Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) Department.
The retailers said the Department of CAPD was forcing them to sell the mutton at Rs 280 per kg.
“How could CAPD expect us to sell it at Rs 280? This is sheer injustice to us and we will not tolerate unnecessary humiliation,” he said, adding that the strike will continue “unless Government stops sealing our shops.”
However, All Kashmir Wholesale Mutton Dealers Association’s acting president Meraj-ud-Din Ganie refuted the claims of the retailers.
The dealers and retailers blamed the Government for not checking the illegal supply of mutton. They said the Government has invested crores of rupees on setting up their units, but failed to supply even less than five percent of market demand.
