DGP reviews security

SRINAGAR, Sept 12: Chief Secretary BVR Subrahmanyam today said that Panchayat and Municipal polls in the State would be held as per schedule.
Addressing a function at SKICC in Srinagar, Subrahmanyam said that the Local Bodies and Municipal polls will be held as per schedule. “There are multiple views going on. We have decided they are going on as per schedule. There will be no change in the dates, there will no change in the schedule. Three weeks from now we will have Urban Local Body elections. First week of November, we will have Panchayat elections,” he said.

The Chief Secretary said that security arrangements are in place for polls. “That train is moving relentlessly and nothing is stopping it. Our mind is on the organization; people, State, candidates and security arrangements”, he said.
And in the meantime, Director General of Police Dilbag Singh held a meeting with senior officers to review the security for the upcoming polls.
The DGP directed the District SSPs and DIGs that deployment plans should be worked out and fine tuned in such a way that foolproof security is provided for these elections. He said that whatever support in shape of logistic and manpower is required is being pooled out and will be placed at the disposal for smooth conduct of these elections.
Singh said that stern action should be taken against the elements who foment trouble and at the same time contingency plans should be ready to tackle any eventuality. “We should be selective and specific for better results in the ground,” he said and directed the police that due care must be taken in all the situations so that things do not precipitate in any law and order situations.
The meeting was attended by DIGs and SSPs of Kashmir Zone through video conferencing. ADGP Headquarters Abdul Ghani Mir, IGP Personal J P Singh and IGP Kashmir Zone SP Pani were present in this meeting.
The Municipal polls will be conducted in four phases and polling will be held between October 1 and November 5. Panchayat elections will be conducted in eight phases between November 8 and December 4.
