Srinagar, May 9: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti today called for “political intervention” to end the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan.
Addressing a press conference here, a visibly emotional Mehbooba described the situation as “dangerous,” particularly for people living near the borders.
She stressed that history has shown “military actions” do not yield lasting results.
“The situation along the borders between India and Pakistan is dangerous. There is an urgent need for restraint and de-escalation. The leaders of both countries must act wisely and make efforts to reduce tensions,” she said.
The PDP President pointed out that people living along the borders on both sides are losing their homes, and many-especially women and children-have lost their lives.

“The people living on the borders did not ask for this, but they are paying a heavy price. What we are witnessing is heartbreaking. We saw twin children in Poonch-one moment they were playing, and the next, their bloodied bodies were recovered. What was their fault? What is the fault of women and children?” she asked.
Referring to the Pulwama attack in 2019 and the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Mehbooba said both events pushed the region to the brink of catastrophe. “If this continues, it will affect the entire world,” she warned.
She noted that while India is emerging as a global power, Pakistan is grappling with internal challenges.
“In such a scenario, both countries must prioritize political dialogue. Military action has proven ineffective. If both sides believe they have achieved their objectives, why must the people of Jammu and Kashmir continue to suffer?”
She warned that both countries are on the brink of war-and both are nuclear powers.
“If it reaches that stage, Jammu and Kashmir will be the first casualty, followed by devastation across both nations and the wider region.”
Mehbooba said “enough” has been done, asserting that both countries have “claimed” to achieve their “objectives.”
“I urge both sides to put an end to this. Live and let us live-and let the people of J&K live. I hope the leadership listens. Enough of the bloodshed; it’s time for political intervention.”
Recalling Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks on the Ukraine conflict, she urged the leaders of India and Pakistan to communicate directly.
