Sir,
This has reference to the article WHO finds air in Indian cities dirtiest’ DE May 29.
Jammu city which is expanding horizontally and vertically is also becoming one of the most polluted cities of the country. The presence of huge number of vehicles on Jammu roads is one of the big causes of increasing pollution. The cause behind vehicular pollution in this city is chaotic traffic. Every day one experiences traffic jams which prolong hours together. During this period, lot of smoke is emitted in the air. Then there are industrial units as well that add to the problem.
Environmentalists in the State have been expressing their concern over increasing levels of pollution, but no substantive measures have been taken to counter the threat.
The Delhi Government has taken some steps to monitor pollution levels. Likewise, the WHO report should serve as a wake up call for the State Government.
The Government should constitute a committee to tackle pollution levels in our both cities-Srinagar and Jammu.
Yours etc…
