Mother, son shot dead

RAJOURI, Dec 24: A young woman and her 5-year-old son, were shot dead by a Village Defence Committee (VDC) Member at Samote village in Budhal area of district Rajouri today.
Reports reaching here said that VDC member Mushtaq Ahmed, son of Mohd Din, resident of  Samote Tune had some tiff with a woman in the neighbour-hood, namely Shamim Akhtar over some issue. They exchanged heated words for long and then the VDC member, Mushtaq  in a fit of anger moved to his house and took out his .303 rifle and fired on Shamim (35) and her minor son Touseeq Ahmed, killing both of them on the spot. The incident took place at around 11 am.
The VDC member threw his rifle on the spot and sensing counter attack from Shamim’s family escaped from the village. The matter came to the notice of police. A police party from Samote Police Post rushed at the site and shifted the bodies to Kotranka hospital for postmortem.
The police with the help of villagers later managed to arrest the accused. The weapon of offence (gun) was also seized by police. A case was registered against him. Shamim’s husband Mohd Din works in Saudi Arabia and he was not at home.
As the bodies of the victims reached Kotranka, the relatives of the deceased persons and villagers started protest demonstration in the town there. They were demanding disbanding of VDC members, Rs 10 lakh compensation for the victim’s family and job for one of the members. The agitating villagers blocked Rajouri-Budhal Road near Kotranka bridge and continued protest from 2 pm to 5 pm.  A large number of vehicles remained stranded on the road.
Later, SSP Rajouri Rajeshwar Singh and Addl Deputy Commissioner Rajouri Mumtaz Ahmed reached there. They assured to review the cases of   VDC members in the entire district as similar incident took place in Potha area of Kalakote three days back where a local NC leader was killed by VDC member. The DC assured that family would be paid Rs 2 lakh as ex-gratia/ relief while he would recommend the case to the Govt for the demand of Rs 10 lakh and job. The people then lifted dharna at round  5 pm.
