UFA: Reaching out to the South Asian neighbours, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today met Afghan President Asharf Ghani on the sidelines of BRICS and SCO summits, soon after heralding a thaw in India-Pakistan relation with a frank one-on-one talks with his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif.
“And the neighbourhood engagement continues. PM @narendramodi with President @ashrafghani of Afghanistan,” Vikas Swarup, spokesperson for External Affairs Ministry tweeted while posting a photo of the meeting.
India has much stakes in peace and stability in Afghanistan in post 2014 scenario, with Pakistan’s role being closely monitored by the international community in containing terrorism.
“More meetings through the day…India-Afghanistan ties being discussed by President @ashrafghani & PM @narendramodi,” said a photo tweet by the PMO.
This was second meeting between the two leaders in the last three months. Mr Ghani had earlier met Mr Modi when he paid a three-day official visit to India from April 27 to 29. Both the leaders held discussions that covered a review of bilateral cooperation activities and the international regional security environment confronting both countries, sources said. The Prime Minister also had a bilateral meeting with Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff.
“Had a great meeting with President @dilmabr. We are very optimistic about the potential of strong India-Brazil ties,” the Prime Minister said in a tweet. (AGENCIES)
