NEW DELHI: With several areas of the country facing drought and water level of 91 major reservoir registering record decrease, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today called for launching a campaign with people’s participation to conserve water.
In his monthly ‘Man Ki Baat’ radio programme, the Prime Minister said several parts of the country were facing water crisis, and though there was good news about the monsoon, but still there were many challenges. He underlined the extreme importance of sensitising people about the need of conservation and harvesting of water.
Mr Modi said any campaign for harvesting of water and protecting the existing water resources should involve people in every city and village. In this context, he spoke of the experiment of the people of Hewre Bazaar village of Maharashtra who changed the crop pattern in view of the climate change.
Underscoring the importance of the Ganga as the water lifeline of millions of people in the country, the Prime Minister expressed concern over pollution in the holy river and said people would have to come together the save the sacred river.
The Prime Minister also talked about the ongoing Maha Kumbh in Ujjain city of Madhya Pradesh and said the occasion should be used for sending out a strong message for conservation of water and ‘Swachchta'(cleanliness).
He said holding of such a massive event also would showcase the event management prowess of the country.
The Prime Minister said the great religious event would go a long way in promoting tourism too, and asked the people and government staff to upload the pictures of Singhast so that maximum people in the world could have an idea about the scale and nature of events.
With the new academic session having started or slated to start soon, the Prime Minister also counseled the people for establishing communication and close rapport with their children or wards to understand their problems.
He also underlined the importance of ensuring quality of education and skill development, saying that the focus should now shift from schooling to learning.
The Prime Minister said technology could play a great part in increasing access of education and enhancing its quality. Mr Modi also used the occasion to underline the power of the people coming together to do something, and cited as an example the effect and success to his appeal for voluntarily giving up the LPG subsidy, so that the more needy could be benefited from the facility.
He said one crore people of the country acted on his call and gave up subsidy on the cooking gas cylinder. (AGENCIES)
