Moderate to heavy rain plummets in Kashmir, wet weather to continue

SRINAGAR :  Moderate to heavy rain during the past 24 hours resulted in cold as more wet weather is predicted during the next 24 hours in the Kashmir valley, where world famous ski resort of Gulmarg recorded lowest 4.5 degree minimum temperature after 22.2 mm rainfall during the night.
A Met department spokesman said there could be rain or thundershowers at most places in the Kashmir valley and Jammu region and at few places in Ladakh region during the next 24 hours. However, there could be decrease in precipitation from May 20, he said.
Barring  Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, the mercury remained above normal despite moderate to heavy rain during the past 24 hours in the valley, where people woke up to yet another wet morning.
Gulmarg, where snow on the ski slopes had melted due to rain and above normal temperature during this month, the minimum temperature also witnessed a drop, due to 22.2 rainfall till 0830 hrs. Against yesterdays 9.4 degree minimum temperature, it dropped and settled at 4.5 degree, 1.5 notches below normal.
However, snow could be seen at Kongdori, Khilanmarg and Affarwat, connected by Cable Car, a hotel owner told UNI over phone.
He said a large number of tourists are arriving at the ski resort from different parts of the country and abroad every day. Interestingly at Pahalgam, a famed health resort in south Kashmir, the minimum temperature witnessed a slight increase. Against yesterday’s 7.8 degree, it was 8 degree, three notches above normal despite 16.4 mm rainfall till 0830 hrs.
Though the minimum temperature witnessed a drop in the summer capital, Srinagar, after 16.7 rainfall till 0830 hrs, it was still above normal. Against yesterday’s 15.4 degrees, it was 13 degrees, still two notches above normal.
Pedestrian movement and traffic at some places were affected due to rain water though the authorities have started repair work of damaged roads in the city. People could be seen wearing woollen and warm clothes in the city due to intermittent rain since this morning. The spokesman said there could be light rain or thundershowers and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 24 degree and 15 degree respectively.
Qazigund recorded 12.4 degree minimum temperature after 8.2 mm rainfall while at Kokernag it was 10.7 degree after recording 6.7 mm rainfall during the night. He said Kupwara received highest 29.7 mm rainfall till 0830 hrs resulting in drop in the minimum temperature. Against yesterday’s 13.3 degree it was 10.3 degree which is being considered normal during this time of the season.
However, the minimum temperature at Leh witnessed increase by about two notches while at Kargil it dropped by about two degrees. Against yesterday’s 7.4 degree minimum temperature at Leh it was 9.3 degree while at Kargil it was 4.5 degree against 6.1 degree. He said the sky would be generally cloudy and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 23 degree and 9 degree respectively at Leh during the next 24 hours.  At Jammu there could be light rain or thundershowers and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 34 degree and 24 degree, he said.
