Model Academy School, JMC organize awareness session on polythene ban

JAMMU, May 22: Model Academy School, in collaboration with Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), organized an awareness-cum-interactive session on polythene ban to promote the movement towards banning polythene and single use plastic.
The occasion was graced by Dr Akshay Sharma, Corporator, Ward Number 8, DC North, Sanjay Badyal and Ashwani Soodan, Private Secretary to the Mayor, JMC. The Programme started with lighting of the traditional lamp by the invited dignitaries followed by recitation of Saraswati Vandana.
Principal, Pramod Kumar Srivastava addressed the gathering giving a preliminary narrative of the initiatives taken for the movement. A documentary on “hazards of plastic and use of biodegradable carry bags” by DRDO was also shown to the students. Another documentary by the JMC officials was also displayed to generate awareness among school students and staff regarding the adverse effects of polythene bags and the initiatives taken by the JMC to deal with them.
An impressive debate was put forth by the students on the topic “Ban of Polythene bags” for which Parushi bagged first prize, Aditya Raina got the second prize and Aahana and Ishit Sharma shared the third prize. Judges for the competition were Pooja Mishra and Maneka Khanna (academic managers, primary and senior wing).
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Akshay said that shopkeepers and other traders shall only use the carry bags recommended by JMC. He highlighted the major challenges faced to the nation as well as Jammu due to massive urbanization.
Badyal in his address, acquainted the audience with various steps taken by JMC in controlling plastic pollution. He highlighted various effective and practical measures that can be implemented to curb the menace of plastic and polythene bags.
Director, MIER, Dr Adit Gupta insisted that the students as stakeholders should play a positive role by coming forward with innovative ideas to reduce the use of plastic and be the ambassadors of change.
