Srinagar, Nov 15: Chairman of moderate Hurriyat faction, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who was supposed to visit the residence of a youth killed recently to offer condolences to his family, was placed under house arrest by authorities.
A Hurriyat spokesman said Mirwaiz was scheduled to offer condolences to the family of Gowhar Nazir Dar of HMT but was detained in his house this afternoon. The spokesman accused the State Government of political vendetta and politics of intolerance. He said the house arrest of the Hurriyat chairman and other separatist leaders on a routine basis was an example of Government’s growing intolerance.
He alleged that the State Government had been muzzling all voice of dissent and trampling the rights of the resistance leadership by disallowing them their just right to assemble and right to propagate their ideologies.
