Mired reputation

Past two years brought our nation some embarrassing moments that tarnished country’s image in the eyes of the world. It started with 2G Spectrum frauds in which a Union Minister was directly involved. That was the opening of Pandora’s Box. We knew more cases of corruption, bribery and vandalizing of official position. Opposition parties tried to make political capital out of these embarrassments and the ruling party was quick to turn the tables on their accusers. The Government on is part, though feeling upset with incredible stories of corruption coming in succession, could not take any action against the defaulters outside the legal frame provided by the judicial system of the country. Such was the low key of our credibility that even the former army chief openly stated that some stakeholders had offered him hefty bribe to do something against propriety. More recently, two important figures, namely Nitin Gadkari the BJP chief and Robert Vadra, the son in law of Congress Chief are accused of financial impropriety. Similar is the case of Congress veteran Virbhadra Singh, who has served five times as Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh. Media has made many stories about their business affairs. Charges of money laundering or tax evasion in the case of Gadkari and favour seeking in the case of Vadra are making rounds. Media hype has made these accusations bizarre. While BJP has refuted the charges against its chief, Congress has trashed stories of favour seeking against Robert Vadra.
It is time to remove a good deal of confusion and speculation created in these cases. BJP is an important national level political party and the party in opposition in the Parliament. Allegations of financial impropriety in respect of its chief are a serious matter for the party and the nation. As such, it would be in fitness of things to evolve some mechanism to prove or disprove allegations against him. The sooner we do it the better. BJP itself should take the initiative to clear the chief. Similarly, Robert Vadra and Virbhadra Singh should put forth their defence with facts and come clean in public. The people want to get at the roots of the facts.
