SRINAGAR, Apr 1: Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president GA Mir along with other leaders visited Indra Nagar Bemina, Hamdania Colony, Gousia Colony, HMT and other areas to take stock of the problem being faced by the people due to incessant rains in the Valley.
Mir was accompanied by CLP Leader Nawang Rigzin Jora, Abdul Rashid Dar, MLA, Usman Majeed, MLA, Gulzar Ahmad Wani, MLA, Amreen Badre, Vice President, SS Chenni, General Secretary, Farooq Andrabi, spokesperson, Hilal Shah, Nazir Ahmad Khan, general secretaries, Abdul Gani Khan and Zahid Hussain Jan, district presidents of Srinagar and Budgam respectively.
While speaking, GA Mir said that the situation is alarming and it must not be allowed to go out of control.
“Government should not forget September 2014 floods”, he said, adding that due to incessant rains, we lost 16 precious lives due to landslides at laden (Chrar-e-Sharief). If the administration would have been alert and cautious enough they (deceased) would have been saved by shifting them to safer places early, he stated.
Mir said Congress will assist the Administration in rescue and rehabilitation of the people and assured the people that the party will leave no stone unturned in extending all help to them.
“Party is monitoring the situation and has asked the cadres to help the people in need as MeT Department has predicted more rains in coming days”, Mir stated.
He emphasized that there is need for long term measures to be undertaken for future safety of the people such as strong embankment and dredging of the nallahs, streams particular River Jehlum on war footing. He said Flood Control Department must be geared up for undertaking these measures. He further said that Government should also ensure dewatering of water logged areas in Srinagar and other districts. He impressed upon the Government to make an assessment of the loss and provide compensation to affected farmers.
