Minor charred to death, several hutments gutted

JAMMU, May 19: A minor boy was charred to death while as hundreds of migrant labourers became homeless after a devastating fire reduced to ashes a large number of hutments in Maratha Mohallah area of Trikuta Nagar.
As per police sources, fire broke out probably due to short circuit in a hutment at Maratha Mohallah in Trikuta Nagar, which later engulfed the adjoining hutments.The fire spread in no time as all the hutments were made of woods, dry grass and other allied materials.
After getting information, police team from Bahu Fort Police Station rushed to the spot after informing Department of Fire and Emergency Services. Within shortest possible time, large number of fire fighters reached the spot and started operation to douse the ablaze.
Before the arrival of fire fighters, one child namely Neeraj, son of Lottan Prasadm, a resident of Bihar had lost his life in the devastating fire. After hectic efforts of several hours, the fire was brought under control and prevented from spreading to nearby hutments. The whole operation was personally supervised by Deputy Director, Department of Fire and Emergency Services R C Raina.
At least 45 hutments were reduced to ashes in the inferno, which left hundreds of people particularly migrant labourers homeless.
Meanwhile, District Administration Jammu has provided relief by arranging temporary sheds and food for the affected families.
