Militant killed as Army foils intrusion bid

JAMMU, Aug 9: One militant was killed and two others were seriously injured as an infiltration bid along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district was foiled by the Army this morning.
The infiltration bid was scuttled in Krishna Ghati sector when the alert troops noticed a group of militants attempting to sneak into this side from across the LoC and immediately engaged them, Jammu-based PRO (defence) Lt Col Devender Anand said.
He said the gunfight resulted in on-the-spot killing of one militant and serious injuries to two others.
“Subsequent search in the area showed that the dead body of the militant had been dragged away from the incident site. However, one AK 47 rifle, two AK 47 magazines and some eatables were recovered from the site,” the spokesman said.
He said Pakistan markings on the eatables and a few other items clearly indicated the complicity of Pakistan in sponsoring terror activities in J&K.
“Security forces are maintaining a robust counter-infiltration grid along the LoC to foil any nefarious designs by Pakistan,” Lt Col Anand said.
Meanwhile, Pakistani troops shelled forward areas along the LoC in Poonch district today, prompting a befitting response from the Indian Army.
There have been no reports of any casualties so far, the official said.
“Around 6.45 am, the Pakistan army initiated unprovoked ceasefire violation by firing with small arms and shelling mortars along the LoC in Mankote sector. Indian Army retaliated befittingly,” the spokesperson said.
Later around 5.50 pm, Pakistan initiated small arms firing and mortar shelling in Shahpur, Kirni and Krishna Ghati sectors, the spokesperson said, adding that the Indian Army again gave a befitting reply.
Intense cross-border shelling continued for about couple of hours.
People in the shelling-hit areas have been directed to stay inside underground bunkers or at other safe places to avoid any loss of life.
