Militant killed, 2 flee

Srinagar, June 8: A Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militant was killed in an encounter that broke out in Verinag area of Anantnag district this morning while as two others managed to escape.
A joint team of Army’s 19 RR, CRPF and SOG cordoned off Nowgam area in Verinag in Anantnag district of South Kashmir early today after inputs about presence of a group of militants hiding in the village.
During the searches, the hiding militants fired upon security forces triggering a brief shoot out. The militants tried to break the cordon during which one militant was killed in the encounter and two others fled away. The killed militant has been identified as Iqbal Ahmad of Panzath, Dooru.
The other two militants were believed to be foreigners and fled to nearby forest from the village. Security forces immediately cordoned off the forest area and conducted searches of the area but there was no trace of the militants.
According to the police records, Iqbal was affiliated with JeM and had a long history of militancy records. “He was wanted by law for his complicity in a series of terror crimes”, police said.
As per police records, he was part of a groups involved in planning and executing series of attacks in the area. “Many terror crime cases were registered against him”, police said.
“Incriminating materials including arms & ammunition were recovered from the site of encounter. All these materials have been taken in the case records for the purpose of investigation and to probe their complicity in other terror crimes”, police said.
Police also requested people to cooperate with it till the area is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials if any.
Security forces this evening cordoned Pahloo village in Kulgam district of South Kashmir after reports about presence of militants in the village. The security forces conducted house to house searches. However, no contact was established with the militants.
