JAMMU, Dec 20: A three-member student team from Model Institute of Engineering and Technology (MIET) comprising Shivam Suri (IT), AzlanAbid Shah (CSE) and TahseenAbass Khan (CSE) brought laurels to the institution by participating and finishing the first ever National ‘Young India Adventure Racing Championship’ held at Goa recently.
The event was organized by Adventure Racing Federation of India (ARFI), which is headed by General JJ Singh, PVSM, AVSM, VSM (Retd.) (Former Chief of Army Staff), Former Governor, Arunachal Pradesh and a proud alumnus of Model Academy, Jammu.
The 24 hour endurance race included trekking and trailing, mountain biking and river rafting over day and night virtually non-stop over a total distance of about 100 Kms with one mandatory halt of around 3 hours at the mid-way point. Over two dozen teams from all parts of country including teams from National Defense Academy andRashtriya Military Academy participated in the race. 19 teams made the cut after the first leg of the race and only 11 teams could complete the rigorous and challenging race spread over 3 legs, including the team from MIET.
General JJ Singh, lauded the efforts of the MIET team for showing competitiveness, high intensity and right attitude resulting in achieving the feat of finishing among top 10 teams. The team was awarded a special prize of “Best Competitive Under Dog Adventure Team” and were felicitated with medallions and certificates during the valedictory function presided over by General J.J Singh.
Dr. Arun. K Gupta, Chairman MIER and Dr.Renu Gupta, Director MIER congratulated the students for their outstanding performance in the national adventure race. The institution had provided complete financial support to the students covering their registration fee for the event and to and fro air travel to Goa.
