JAMMU, Aug 31: Few days after the Union Home Ministry made a formal announcement that Rohingyas and Bangladeshis were illegally settled in Jammu and that they had to be deported, the Ministry has formally asked the administration to send complete profiling of the illegal immigrants putting up here with their actual location before initiating their process of deportation.
“The process of profiling has been set into motion,” official sources told the Excelsior, adding it would take some time as the Union Home Ministry has sought fully particular of Rohingyas and Bangladeshis including the period they reached Jammu and accurate address in their countries.
The Home Ministry has asked the administration to complete profiling within a month and forward it to them as the Centre was under intense pressure not only in Jammu and Kashmir but also in some other States on deportation of Rohingyas and Bangladeshis following Intelligence inputs that they could become security threat in the country.
Details sought by the MHA included total number of Rohingyas settled in Jammu region, the places they are living in, time since they have settled here, their actual addresses in Myanmar and Bangladesh, facilities provided to them here, total number of families and related information.
It has also sought information pertaining to the work being done by Rohingyas and Bangladeshis here and whether they were involved in criminal activities or militancy and could pose security threat to the State, which has already been faced by the Pakistan-sponsored militancy.
Sources said during profiling, the State has come across certain startling figures, which indicated that number of Rohingyas and Bangladeshis has gone up from 5700 to 6300 in just one year.
“The fresh Rohingyas have come clandestinely and settled at Sunjwan and surroundings, where some of them were already putting up,” sources said, adding that the influx was virtually unchecked despite alarm raised not only by the Intelligence agencies but also various political and social organizations seeking immediate deportation of the illegal immigrants.
“As soon as profiling of the Rohingyas and Bangladeshi nationals is completed, it would be sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs,” sources said, adding that the task was likely to be completed within the stipulated period.
“A comprehensive profiling is being done of Rohingyas, Burmese and other foreign nationals, settled mostly in Jammu and Samba districts of this region. The profiling will also include possession of United National Human Rights Commission (UNHRC) cards, time of issuance of cards etc,” sources said.
Asserting that majority Rohingyas, settled here, possessed UNHRC cards, sources said it was being ascertained as to whose direction these cards were issued.
However, preliminary investigations by the administration have revealed that it was during the tenure of UPA-II at the Centre when P Chidambaram was the Union Home Minister and it was National Conference-Congress coalition Government in the State when UNHCR cards were issued to Rohingyas for their settlement in Jammu and Samba districts. But, the sources pointed out that number of Rohingyas has swelled during the course of time and efforts were on to find out whether all of them had duly come after issuance of UNHCR cards or settled here illegally after crossing the border.
“The profiling would cover number of Rohingyas, who were with or without UNHCR cards,” sources pointed out. There had been reports with the Intelligence agencies that some of the foreign nationals could be living here even without the UNHCR cards.
According to sources, the Centre seems worried about the Intelligence reports that Rohingyas and Bangladeshi nationals could become security threat in various States especially Jammu and Kashmir as they were more prone to radicalization.
It may be mentioned here that Union Minister of State for Home Hansraj Gangaram Ahir during his recent visit to Jammu had made the MHA stand very clear on Rohingyas describing their stay in Jammu as illegal and declaring that they would be deported.
