Mere 12 pc women representation in Parliament worrisome: Pranab

NEW DELHI :  President Pranab Mukherjee today expressed his concern over the fact that despite equal rights enshrined in the Constitution, the representation of women in Parliament has not gone beyond 12 per cent. Addressing a two-day National Conference of Women Legislators here at Vigyan Bhawan, Mr Mukherjee said from the very first day of adoption of Constitution, all citizens were declared as having equal rights in every sphere of activity. He said there can not be a true empowerment without a proper representation of women who comprise almost 50 per cent of Indian population. The President also praised Prime Minster Narendra Modi for his commitment to the cause of women. “Prime Minister Modi is here. I want to thank him for his commitment to the cause of women reflected in his slogan ? ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ (Save the Girl Child, Educate the Girl Child). He his here in the conference, not to speak but only to participate. This speaks of his total commitment to what he preaches and what he believes.” The President also called for a change in attitude of political parties and made a case for passing the Constitutional amendment bill for mandatory 33 per cent reservation for women in Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha and the State assemblies.
