SRINAGAR : Mercury has dropped again due to moderate to heavy rains in the Kashmir valley, where a Western Disturbance was active after dry weather during the past about two weeks.
The maximum temperature recorded a drop while the minimum temperature remained above normal in the valley though there was intermittent rain during the past 24 hours.
A Met department spokesman said here this afternoon that light to moderate rain or thundershowers would occur at many places over Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours. During the subsequent four days, there would be decrease in precipitation and dry weather thereafter.
World famous ski resort of Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir received 7.8mm rainfall overnight resulting in two degree drop in the minimum temperature against yesterday when it was 8.2 degrees Celsius. However, it was 6.2 degrees Celsius, two notches above normal.
Pahalgam, a famous health resort in south Kashmir recorded 8.6 degrees, about four notches above normal though there was 14 mm rainfall till 0830 hrs.
The summer capital, Srinagar, where the administration was busy repairing damaged roads in the city, people woke up to a cloudy and cold morning though the maximum temperature remained above normal.
The spokesman said the minimum temperature in the city was 13.4 degrees, more than three notches above normal after 10.1 mm rainfall till 0830 hrs. However, the maximum temperature witnessed a drop due to rain and cloudy weather. He said the maximum temperature in the city was 23.4 degree, which is being considered normal during this period of the season. However, it was more than 4 to six notches above normal during the past one week.
He said there could be light rain or thundershowers and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 20 degree and 12 degree respectively in the summer capital tomorrow.
At Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir the minimum temperature was 12.7 degree, about four notches above normal, Kokernag 11.4 degree, more than two degree above normal and Kupwara 13.3 degree, more than four notches above normal, he said. Leh and Kargil in Ladakh region recorded 9 degree and 6.1 degree minimum temperature respectively, he said adding there is possibility of light rain and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 17 degree and 8 degree respectively during the next 24 hours.
