Mercury dips across valley: Kargil freezes at minus 20 deg C

SRINAGAR : Cold conditions persisted in the Kashmir Valley with Kargil freezing at minus 20 degree Celsius coldest of the winter so far. The minimum temperature also witnessed drop in the Kashmir valley, where Pahalgam, a health resort in south Kashmir recorded coldest night of the season after the minimum temperature dropped to minus 11.2 degree while at famed ski resort of Gulmarg, it was minus 10 degree. A Met department spokesperson said the weather will remain dry and cold during the next 24 hours. However, there could be light rain or snowfall on February 8 as a fresh but weak Western Disturbance (WD) is approaching the region.
Kargil, a border town on Srinagar-Leh national highway, closed since December last year, continued to freeze as the minimum temperature dropped further and settled at minus 20 degree, coldest of the winter so far.The earlier coldest was recorded on January 9 when it was minus 17.2 degree. At Leh it was minus 14.1 degree against yesterday’s minus 10.8 degree,the Met spokesperson said. He said the weather will remain mainly clear and cold and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 4 degrees and minus 16 degree at Leh during the next 24 hours. Water bodies,including rivers, lakes and nallahs remained frozen in both the district in the Ladakh region. However, people are being supplied water through tankers while in the far-flung and remote areas, people are using spring water which remains cold during spring and warm in winter. (AGENCIES)
