KATHMANDU, May 18: Members of Nepal’s Shram Sanskriti Party staged a protest in the House of Representatives on Monday, raising questions over Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s absence.
The protest was during the discussion on the issues raised by lawmakers relating to the government’s policies and programmes.
As soon as the meeting began, party chair and parliamentary party leader Harka Sampang, along with other lawmakers, displayed placards inside the House in protest.
The lawmakers displayed pamphlets to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dol Prasad Aryal, with the slogans “Prime Minister must be accountable to the Parliament,” “Can’t run away from questions,” “Stop bringing ordinance by deceiving the Parliament,” “Shoulder Parliamentary responsibility,” etc.
The opposition parties, including Harka’s Shram Sanskriti Party, have been opposing the Prime Minister’s behaviour of being absent from the House during crucial hours.
On May 14, four opposition parties in Nepal boycotted the House of Representatives meeting, demanding that Prime Minister Shah be present in the House to respond to lawmakers’ queries on the government’s policies and programmes.
The lawmakers staged a walkout while Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle was replying on behalf of the Prime Minister to questions raised during deliberations on the government’s annual policies and programmes.
Lawmakers of the ruling Nepali Congress also protested by standing up while the Finance Minister was addressing the House. (PTI)
