SRINAGAR : Taking a dig at Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti for deferring by-election in Anantnag Assembly constituency, working president of the main opposition National Conference (NC) Omar Abdullah said this was a clear admission of how bad the situation is in her regime.
Taking to micro blogging site Twitter after remaining silent for about a week, Mr Abdullah said, “In an admission of how bad the situation is under @mehbooba_mufti the Election commission has been forced to postpone Anantnag by-election”.
“The election was scheduled for May 16, but state govt had written to EC that the situation “isn’t conducive” & it’s been postponed”, he said. He further tweeted “t’s an admission both of how bad things have become under @mehbooba_mufti & how petrified she is of facing the people in the by-election”.
“She was desperate for an excuse to avoid an election and used Handwara/Kupwara. Tells you a lot about her”, he further tweeted. The Election Commission had announced bypoll in the Anantnag Assembly constituency on May 16.
The bypoll was necessitated following the death of Chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed on January 7 in AIIMS. However, yesterday the EC deferred the polls on the recommendation of the state government that situation was not conducive for polls.
In a statement here yesterday, he termed the move to seek the postponement of by-elections as a loud and clear admission of failure by Ms Mehbooba.
She was evidently terrified of facing the people, Mr Abdullah said. “In seeking the postponement of the election for the Anantnag Assembly Constituency, Ms Mehbooba has shown that she has panicked and is hiding behind the EC.
This desperate and evasive move shows how badly the Chief Minister is governing the State and is a formal admission of defeat by the PDP-BJP alliance. Fearing rejection by the people, the Chief Minister has evaded the very first formal referendum on the PDP-BJP alliance and that’s a very significant development”, he.
The said Ms Mehbooba was trying to escape the consequences of PDP’s sell-outs and political surrenders under the fig-leaf of an allegedly ‘non-conducive’ situation.
“When the Chief Minister of a state is petrified of failing to seek an electoral validation to continue in her chair, the very credibility, mandate and writ of the Government becomes questionable. Knowing well that her party is facing a complete rout at the grassroots level, she has chosen to run away from her very first test and that’s tragic”, Mr Abdullah said.
“The people of J&K have rejected this alliance of convenience and have also seen how much of a failure it amounted to in its previous year in power. Ms Mehbooba spectacular U-turn on seeking Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) from the Government of India has catalysed PDP’s political obliteration. If she is so scared of facing the people, with what credibility and confidence will she rule the state?”, the statement further added. (AGENCIES)
