JAMMU, May 25: A protest was organized near the Press Club, Jammu under the chairmanship of Narinder Datt, president of All Jammu and Kashmir Megh Sabha.
A large number of villagers from Kothe Chorli area of Bishnah including members of All J&K Megh Sabha participated in the protest and expressed serious concern regarding the open sale and spread of “Chitta” and other narcotic substances in their area. The villagers alleged that two- three families in the area, are openly involved in the illegal drug trade but no sufficient preventive action has yet been taken in this regard by local police.
Talking to the media persons, Narinder Datt stated that the Lt Governor has already initiated a 100-day mission to eliminate the drug menace from Jammu & Kashmir, and therefore, strict action must be ensured at the ground level as well. He questioned why such illegal activities are still continuing openly in Chorli village and what concrete action has been taken so far against those involved.
It was also highlighted that even female members of those families are reportedly engaged in such illegal activities, which has created fear among local residents regarding the future of their children and youth. The villagers stated that they are worried that the younger generation may fall into drug addiction if strict action is not taken immediately.
The villagers stated that local residents had repeatedly tried to oppose and discourage such activities in the village. However, during the previous week, a local youth who had reportedly opposed the drug trade was attacked with sharp weapons by alleged drug peddlers. The injured youth is still hospitalized, and villagers alleged that no major action has yet been taken in the matter.
During the protest, Narinder Datt appealed to the Lieutenant Governor, DGP, IG and SSP Jammu to intervene into the mater and deploy special police team to take action as the local police has remained inactive .
