JAMMU, Sept 24: Sensing the festive season of Navratras when food stuffs laden with oil and excessive sugar rules the daily menu, Dr. Sushil Sharma HoD Cardiology, GMC Jammu has recommended to follow essential guidelines keeping in view the fact that diet is fundamental factor responsible for the progression of coronary heart diseases.
“It seems paradoxical when recent studies revealed that periodic fasting is also good for one’s health, and one’s heart. Fasting not only lowers one’s risk of coronary artery disease and diabetes, but also causes significant changes in a person’s blood cholesterol levels. Both diabetes and elevated cholesterol are known risk factors for coronary heart disease. Healthy cooking methods, healthy food alternatives and appropriate selection of foods would only help in achieving the real benefit of fasting,” he said.
Dr Sushil held a day long camp with the residents of Gho- Manhasan on the outskirts of Jammu city. More than 200 patients were examined, evaluated and screened for the Cardiovascular Disease.
While Interacting with the patients he advised everyone to adhere to well balanced diet. “Try to eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, choose options that are lower in fat and salt and sugar whenever you can. To help look after your heart health it is important to make sure that you choose the right type of fats. So to help keep your heart health replace saturated fats with small amounts of mono and polyunsaturated fats, cut down on foods containing transfats,” he added.
Dr Sharma said, “No doubt by single act of fasting one can control number of other risk factor for cardiovascular diseases viz., people tend not to smoke or drink alcohol, which also can reduce heart disease risk. Further those who routinely fast show self-control over how many calories they eat and drink, and this behaviour may translate into weight control and better eating choices when they aren’t fasting.”
