JAMMU: After meat market, Ward Number 6, Gujjar Nagar is having maximum number of meat shops in the city and this pocket of Jammu city is many times blamed for desecrating river Tawi by throwing wastes from these shops into the holy river.
However, other problems are also very much there in the Ward to which the people here have a concern.
Razzak-a college student said that many youth of the Ward have fallen prey to the menace of addiction, especially drugs and are destroying themselves.
“This is an un-Islamic activity and also against national interests,” he maintained.
When contacted, a housewife-Noor Bibi said that there is no place for garbage disposal in the Ward and people spread litter by throwing their garbage here and there, which the street dogs further ransack.
Apart from this, many people in the Ward said that they face problems due to poor drainage system, broken lanes, poor street lights, stray animals-dogs, cows and horses.
“There are many hanging electric wires very loosely attached with the poles and may fall anytime threatening human lives,” Haji Rehman-an elder of the locality said.
After the recently concluded Urban Local Bodies (ULB) elections, Mohi-u-Din Chowdhary has emerged as the new Corporator of the Ward and the locals here now expect very many things from him.
In an interaction with EXCELSIOR Chowdhary explained his plans about his Ward.
Expressing his deep concern over the menace of drug addiction among some youth of the Ward, Chowdhary said that soon police department will be approached for maintaining an extra vigil.
He also said that the parents should also keep a close watch over the activities of their children as addiction further leads to crime and there is a dark end to this.
“After about 14 years the ULB elections were held in the State and in this long gap the problems of drainage, street lights, garbage disposal etc have increased manifolds,” he said adding that soon all these problems will be tackled one-by-one.
He fixed his priority towards cleanliness and sanitation in the Ward.
“There are also some very old houses in the Ward which are on the verge of collapse while the owners are also not in a position to get them repaired. I will see if something can be done for such houses,” he informed.
On desecration of river Tawi by the throwing of wastes from meat shops in the Ward he said that soon the meat shops and some eateries in the Ward will be provided dustbins in which they will put all the wastes and then throw it into the main container which will soon be placed at some places in the Ward.
“This will also solve the problem of garbage disposal in the Ward and number of street dogs roaming near such shops will too reduce as they will get nothing to eat there,” he further said.
Remembering his childhood days he said, “Still I remember the time when we used to drink the water of river Tawi but now human activities have polluted it beyond limits.”
On the problem of stray animals he said that veterinary wing of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) will be approached soon to tackle the problem.
“Especially the street dogs are a big problem. They scare children, women and elders on one hand and spread litter on the other hand thereby making the environment dirty,” the Corporator said.
On the issue of blocked drains he said that some people in the Ward have reared cows and buffaloes at home and their dung is thrown into the drains which blocks them.
“Madly thrown garbage and poly-bags too blocks the drains and soon we will start a campaign to aware people to properly dispose garbage and stop using poly-bags,” Chowdhary informed.
He also said that street lights will soon be installed in the Ward because it becomes completely dark in the evening hours and many times people fall as the streets too are broken in the Ward by one agency or the other almost every month.
The Corporator further said that a public park near Tawi Bridge is in bad shape and he will get it developed soon.
He also said that authorities will soon be consulted for the long pending demand of the Ward about a community hall.
Mohi-u-Din Chowdhary is a first time Corporator and he won the ULB elections with a margin of 55 votes.
He defeated independent candidate Ayub Malik who got 855 votes against 910 polled to Chowdhary.
Chowdhary is a Property Dealer by profession and his wife Heena is housewife and they have a three years old daughter Iqra.
He said that during campaigning he promised widow pensions, help to poor, sports activities in the Ward, Vocational centers for ladies to learn tailoring etc.
