Mayor, Dy among prominent Councillors to lose Wards to reservation

SRINAGAR, Sept 11: The Mayor of Srinagar and his Deputy are among several prominent councillors of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) who will lose their Wards in the proposed reservation.
As per the notice issued last week, out of 74 Wards in Srinagar, 25 have been reserved for women under open category. These include Ward numbers 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 23, 26, 29, 32, 35, 38, 41, 44, 47, 50, 53, 56, 59, 62, 65, 69, 71 and 74.
The Women reserved wards are Nishat, Pantha Chowk, Ikhrajpora,Channapora, Rawalpora Hamdaniya Colony, Sheikh Dawood Colony, Karan Nagar, Bemina East, Parimpora, Mujgund, Basant Bagh Khankah-e Moula A, Makhdoom Sahib, Rozabal, Nawabazar, Eidgah, Tarabal, Alamgari Bazar, Lal Bazar, Jogi Lanker, Boud Dal, Soura, Ahmad Nagar and Bagh-e-Mehtab Shankerpora.
The Ward No. 65, Boud Dal where from Srinagar Mayor, Junaid Azim Mattoo, was elected in last elections as a Corporator has been reserved. Deputy Mayor Perwaiz Qadri of National Conference (NC) who represents ward No. 38 Khankah-e Moula A is losing his Ward to reservation.
The Ward No. 69 Soura which is represented by the former Mayor of Srinagar and senior NC leader Salman Sagar has also been reserved. As per the sequence Ward No. 68 Habbak represented by Mohammad Saleem Lone had to be reserved but instead Soura has been reserved.
Sagar told Excelsior that they have filed objections with the Chief Electoral Officer against this. “The sequence been deliberately not followed here in my case. This is motivated and it conveys a lot,” he said.
The former Mayor, however, said that whatever will be the outcome of the objections he has to fight the Municipal elections whether from Soura or any other Ward.
The Ward No. 2 Nishat represented by the former Deputy Mayor Sheikh Mohmmad Imran has also been reserved.
The Ward No. 23 Karan Nagar and Ward No. 5 Pantha Chowk represented by BJP leader Ashok Kaul and Latif Mir have been reserved for women.
The Wards where from many Congress and Apni Party Corporators won last Municipal elections have also been reserved.
