Mattoo calls for adoption of high-density plants

ANANTNAG, June 11: Advisor to the Chief Minister, Prof. Amitabh Mattoo today visited the high-density orchard at Bemdoora area of Anantnag to review the growth and proliferation of first-ever high-density model apple orchard.
The orchard that was inaugurated last year by former Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, has been setup by Khurram, a young Valley-based entrepreneur who aims to make Kashmir a leading exporter of high-quality apples.
Interacting with the entrepreneur, Prof. Mattoo expressed hope for augmentation of horticulture industry of the State owing to the efforts of young entrepreneurs and their bold initiatives towards making Kashmir a Fruit Valley as envisioned by the former Chief Minister. He said that the need of the hour is to switch to the high density plants as they lead to a higher yield.
While interacting with the Advisor, Khurram said about 200 high-density plants can be planted on one kanal of land which is 10 times higher than the traditional cultivation practices. He said that he has also established nurseries at places like Poonch and Shopian to serve as distribution centers for these high density plants.
