50 more MBBS seats for SKIMS, GMC Srinagar

Srinagar, June 4: The Medical Council of India (MCI) has accorded sanction to the increase of 50 seats each for SKIMS Medical College, Bemina and Government Medical College (GMC), Srinagar while the Health and Medical Education Department sanctioned the utilization of newly constructed 500-bedded Hospital at Bemina as a full-fledged 500 bedded Pediatrics Hospital.
“Sanction is accorded to the conversion of the whole complex of 200 bedded maternity hospital and 300 bedded Pediatrics Hospital at Bemina Srinagar into a full-fledged 500 bedded Children Hospital,” reads Government order (vide No:547-HME of 2019 dated 04-06-2019).
And the SKIMS Medical College, Bemina under Deemed University of Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences has been permitted the increased seats for MBBS admissions from 50 to 100.The GMC has also been asked to start with the permitted increase of 50 seats.
A letter from the Union Health Ministry to GMC, Srinagar reads that the MCI has decided to accord the sanction for increase of intake capacity of seats from 100 to 50.
“I am directed to refer to the board of Governors in supersession of Medical Council of India’s letter…and to convey the approval of the Central Government to the recommendations of BoG-MCI for the recognition of the MBBS degree awarded Kashmir University, Kashmir when graded on or after November, 2018 for increased number of seats from 100 to 150,” the letter reads.
The SKIMS, Medical College, after applying for the increase was granted the same in the year 2013 but due to deficiencies pointed out by MCI recognition of these seats was awaited.
However, the SKIMS PRO said that in the last two years most of the deficiencies were addressed in phased manner and “Medical Council of India (MCI) assessed the compliance of the institution with regard to the rectification of deficiencies pointed out in its previous inspections as the last inspection of the Medical College was held by Medical Council of India on May 11, 2019.”
“The compliance verification report (11.05.2019) along with the summary /observations of the member of the undergraduate expert group appointed by the Board of Governors (Bog) in supersession of the MCI and vide letter no:MCI-37 (RECOG-14)9UG/2017-Med/ recommended to the Central Government for recognition /approval of SHER-I-KASHMIR-INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES, SRINAGAR for award to MBBS degree granted by SKIMS against the increased intake I, e, from 50 to 100 seats u/s 11(2) of the IMC ACT, 1956,” a SKIMS PRO said.
