Martyrdom day of 1971 war icon tomorrow

JAMMU, Dec 14: Martyrdom day of martyred Grenadier Puran Singh of 3 Grenadiers, who made a supreme sacrifice on the call of nation, will be celebrated on December 16 at 11 am in village Gandharwan, tehsil Akhnoor to commemorate his contributions in the Indian victory of 1971 Indo-Pak War.
Honouring the sentiments of his wife, war widow Santosh Kumari and inhabitants of village Gandharwan, will be observing ‘martyr day’ of late Puran Singh to commemorate his sacrifice at the alter of the nation on the same day in 1971 while his battalion was advancing to capture Shakargarh town from the Pakistanis. Lahore is 13 kilometers ahead of Shakargarh. In the unit, he is remembered as an icon of dare devilery.
Rajeev Sharma, MLA Akhnoor, Sunaina Sharma, SDM Akhnoor; CO  69 Armed Regt. with wife, Tehsildar Akhnoor, SDPO Akhnoor, Colonel BR Sharma, Retd, besides many serving and retired officers, JCOs and other ranks with families will be present to solemnize the sacrifice of brave and beloved soldier.
Grenadier Puran Singh laid down his life at a very young age in the service of the nation. He is an icon of sacrifice, compassion and bravery in the society. He inspires one and all particularly those in the village. The extent of his inspiration was so much that all male members from various families from the village joined armed forces as officers and other rank to serve the motherland. Five officers in one family is also seen in the village.
Santosh Kumari is highly respected by the society and Army fraternity. This has been stated by KP Singh, who is coordinating the event. “It is because of sacrifices of son of the soil that we are safe in the border areas from where infiltration by terrorist and ceasefire violations continue unabated”, he added.
