VIJAYPUR, Mar 5: Launching attack on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for ignoring refugee issues, former Minister and senior Congress leader Manjit Singh today alleged that J&K Government deliberately avoided recommending Jat community for backward class status even as they are socially, economically and educationally and politically most backward from other communities in the border State.
Issuing the statement, Singh said that the UPA Government has given reservation to Jats as backward classes in nine States of India, while J&K failed to get same status for the community which has a population of nearly 6 lakh from Poonch to Kathua districts of Jammu division in 18 constituencies of J&K.
Singh, who was annoyed with the negative attitude of the Government, said that it was the same Omar Government which has yet not sent the package for one time settlement of refugees to the Central Government despite assurance of getting the package.
He further said that Jats go to neighbouring State of Punjab and work there to earn livelihood in view of lack of job scopes in the J&K.
