Management of waste in rural areas

The write up titled” Management of waste in rural areas” by Dr R M Bhat (DE 29th January 2017)has done full justice in identifying various schemes and approaches recently launched by various Government agencies in managing rural waste. However the responsibilities of common man together with elected representatives of panchayats in this auspicious mission work have not been stressed for further action at their level.  It would have been more practical if the role and responsibility of a common resident in maintaining the rural sanitation would have been identified to create further awareness. Though the farming community that mostly comprise rural population do re-use the rural waste since time immemorial but the need of the hour is to introduce scientific approach for the purpose. Occurrence of bio-agents like stray   pigs, dogs, poultry, animals and many species of birds that are part of rural ecosystem, undertake natural scavenging activities as a part of food chain   need recognition and balancing.
