Man killed in CRPF firing

Srinagar, May 13: A 25-year-old man was killed by Central Reserve Police (CRPF) firing on Srinagar-Gulmarg road triggering clashes in the area in which several persons were injured.
A man travelling in a car was fired at by the CRPF personnel at a naka on Srinagar-Gulmarg road near Kawoosa area of Narbal in district Budgam this morning. He has been identified as Mehrajudin Peer son of Ghulam Nabi Peer of Makhama, Beerwah Budgam.
The man was rushed to hospital where he succumbed to injuries. Soon after the killing of the youth, residents of the village protested in against the killing.
Police and CRPF were deployed in the adjacent villages and all roads leading to Makhama were sealed to prevent people from assembling in the village.
Clashes rocked the Narbal and Makhama areas of Beerwah against the killing of the youth. Security forces who were heavily deployed fired teargas and pellets to disperse the protestors. At least six protestors were injured, two of them with pellets in their eyes including a girl protestor. The injured have been referred to SMHS hospital in Srinagar for treatment. Hundreds of people participated in the funeral of slain youth at Makhama amid slogans demanding punishment to guilty. Authorities snapped internet in Budgam district as a precautionary measure.
Father of the slain youth Ghulam Nabi Shah told reporters that his son was dragged out of the vehicle and then shot at. “He had no fault and was dragged out of his vehicle and then killed,” he said.
A police spokesman said here that at 10.20 am, during a joint naka at Khalisa Kawoosa, Narbal in the jurisdiction of police station Magam, a Wagon-R vehicle bearing number JK02AK-6702 was signaled to stop. “However, the vehicle didn’t stop and fled away from two naka points in suspicious condition,” the statement said.
The naka opened fire at the vehicle to thwart the attempt. “The driver of the vehicle got injured in the incident and has been identified as Mehrajudin Peer son of Ghulam Nabi Peer of Makhama, Beerwah Budgam,” the spokesman said.
The injured was shifted to hospital for treatment, but he succumbed. Police has registered a case and investigations have been taken up.
