Cloudburst triggers flash flood in Doda

JAMMU, July 22: A man was killed after hit by shooting stones in Pogar Paristan area of Ramban district which witnessed heavy rains this morning, damaging a house, foot-bridge and a portion of road while a link road was washed away in flash flood in Doda district triggered by cloud burst and torrential rains.
According to the reports, a 55-year-old man identified as Abdul Rashid Bhat, resident of village Cheoli (Paristan) was killed when he was hit by a boulder amid heavy rains in Ramban district. The deceased man was on way to his water mill in Pogal Paristan area when he was hit by the boulder.
Pogal Paristan area of Ramban district witnessed heavy rains and flash floods in the morning in which a house belonging to Gulam Nabi son of Abdul Aziz, resident of Ward Number 2 (Chanbass) damaged in Panchayat Alinbass and a portion of Ukhral-Senabathi road was damaged.
A foot-bridge abutment near Magarkote Panchayat Ghar Sujmatrna was also swept away in the flash floods, leaving several villages including Khowara, Dargali, Dardahi and Ahima without connectivity. Deputy Commissioner Ramban Mussarat Islam said that cognizance for repairs has been taken to resolve the connectivity issue at the earliest.
In Doda district, a cloudburst around the Kota Nullah early this morning washed away a stretch of the Thaleela-Chirala link road, creating a flood-like situation. Sub Divisional Magistrate, Thathri, Athar Amin Zargar told Excelsior that the cloud burst coupled with heavy rain resulted in mudslides and a flood-like situation in Kota Nullah. However, he said, no loss of life or injury was reported while men and machinery were on job to clear debris from the road and restore it at the earliest.
Zargar further informed that a man namely Raj Singh son of Rumal Singh, resident of Amala (Udhampur) got stuck in a sudden flash flood at Puneja Road and was saved by a team of Police Post Karara. He said the Doda-Kishtwar stretch of highway which also got closed between Shiva Pull to Thathri Petrol Pump has been restored for two way traffic.
Meanwhile, torrential rains continued in most parts of Doda and Kishtwar districts for the third day on Saturday, resulting in the increase in water level in the Chenab and its tributaries Neeru and Kalnai. The authorities have advised people to remain cautious and stay away from rivers, streams, and other vulnerable spots.
In Akhnoor area of Jammu, a Gujjar hamlet at Ghadkhal, close to the Chenab River inundated due to rise in the water level of the River in the morning. As per officials, the water level of the Chenab at Akhnoor reached 29.6 feet in the morning against the flood alert level of 32 feet.
A meteorological department official said that light to moderate rains and thunderstorms have also been reported from other parts of Jammu and Kashmir.
He said widespread light to moderate rains or thunderstorms with isolated rains will be occurred in many parts of J&K for next 24 hours. He said this will be followed by intermittent light to moderate rain at scattered places on subsequent two days.
