Make admission through Entrance tests

Hamid Hashmi
The Universities of Jammu and Kashmir have adopted a very strange procedure of admission which is of its own nature. Mainly, Kashmir University, University Of Jammu and Cluster University have adopted a system of composite merit for admission to UG and PG courses. The composite merit is composed of both the academic percentage and entrance percentage. The JU gives 75% weightage to academic percentage and 25% to entrance test score. Meanwhile KU gives 60% weightage to entrance test score and 40% to academic percentage and Cluster University of Jammu gives 70% weightage to Academic percentage and 30% weightage to entrance test score.
Under this system the entrance test beat down it’s worth because it has a very less weightage in admission. It is beyond doubt that entrance test is a very sound method of admiting students to various courses as it brings out the best. But the above said universities are committing blunder and infact playing with the career of thousands of students in the  name of entrance test. For avoiding this faulty procedure in making final selections, the students have raised their voice to abrogate the academic weightage system and give weightage only  to entrance test which is being practised by all reputed Universities Of India. But till date no developments has been made in this regard. The Percentage of marks at graduation level for PG Courses and Higher Secondary that is 12th standard for UG Courses as a criteria for admitting students to UG, PG and other courses has been abandoned by reputed institutions of the country long ago. But it is unfortunate that J&K Universities have not realised the value of entrance and through successive years it has raised the weightage of points for percentage at graduation level and Higher Secondary Level and made the entrance only of a Customary in nature.
The JU entrance test is giving too much weightage to Mental Ability and Reasoning which is  beyond the comprehension and a highly discriminatory move by the premier instution of state. It is noteworthy to mention here that Jammu University Entrance Test (JUET) is comprises of 150 marks and each question carries 1 mark. The division of the entrance is mainly of General Knowledge 40 marks, General English 40 marks, Reasoning 40 marks and Mental Ability of 30 marks. Again if we go through with the UPSC exam, we will find that Reasoning is only of qualifying nature in reputed Exam of our Country but because of high headedness of varsity the reasoning part is more than the qualifying nature.
Thirdly, the subject oriented entrance pattern should be adopted wherein the questions relating to subject shall be asked to the candidate who wants to pursue Master’s   and honours’s or any other professional degree and avoid common entrance test pattern as adopted by JU and Cluster University of Jammu.
So it is  requested to the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir to intervene in the said matters and pass directions to concerned authorities to switch over the entrance method in true spirit and not play with the career of thousands of aspiring students.
