Total pool of PG seats rise to 560

JAMMU, Apr 29: In a good news amidst all the bad news regarding additional COVID 19 cases, Union Ministry of Health and Family on the recommendations of MCI has increased PG (MD/MS) seats in three premiere health institutions of Jammu and Kashmir viz Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu, GMC Srinagar and Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Soura, by 67.
This was notified today by Board of Governors in supersession of Medical Council of India (MCI) vide their recommendation letter No. MCI-23(1)(EWS)/2020-Med/100149 dated 29-04-2020.
As per the letter, while 17 seats were granted to J&K under 10A (due to increase of faculty), 50 seats were granted under EWS quota. Out of 50 seats, GMC Jammu got 25 seats under EWS quota while GMC Srinagar and SKIMS were granted 19 and 6 seats respectively.
The GMC Jammu got 4 seats each in MD Anaesthesiology and MS OBG, 3 each in MS General Surgery, MD Pathology and MD Radio-Diagnosis, 2 in MD Paediatrics and one each in MD Physiology, MD Anatomy, MD Community Medicine, MD Pharmacology and MD Immuno Haematology & Blood Transfusion and MD Microbiology.
Similarly, GMC Srinagar was granted 4 seats in MD Physiology, 3 each in MD General Medicine, MS General Surgery and MS OBG, and 2 each in MD Paediatrics, MD Radiodiagnosis and MD Pathology while as SKIMS Soura got 2 seats in MD Anaesthesiology and one seat each in MD Pathology, MD Hospital Administration, MD Community Medicine and MS Orthopaedics.
Sources said with enhancement of 67 PG seats, the total pool of existing Post Graduation seats in UT of J&K will rise from 493 last year to 560 for the academic session 2020-21. These seats are expected to be filled up by May 31, 2020 on the basis of NEET examination which was conducted earlier this year.
“This means 67 additional doctors will undergo specialization from this academic year. Since, these are three-year courses, the additional number of such specialized doctors in these hospitals will be 201 when admissions to the third batch are made,” they added.
Attributing this achievement to pro active intervention of the J&K Health and Medical Education Department, sources said despite the COVID-19 pandemic, it was ensured by the Department that the proposals of all the three Medical Colleges complete in all aspects are submitted timely to the office of Medical Council of India and Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, on 22-04-2020, which led to the grant of total 67 PG seats.
When contacted, Atal Dulloo, Financial Commissioner, Health and Medical Education Department, said that it is a big boost to the Medical Education as against each enhanced PG seat, the Government of India shall be giving the financial aid to the tune of Rs 1.2 crore for the up-gradation of the respective departments in which the PG seats under 10% EWS scheme has been enhanced.
Further, he maintained that this year Health and Medical Education Department has applied for 225 DNB seats, the inspection of which was due in various districts and Medical Colleges of J&K. However, these inspections could not be held because of the current lockdown and prevailing situation in light of COVID-19.
He congratulated all the aspirants who shall be benefitted by enhancement of these seats in the academic session 2020-21. Further, he said that the necessary directions have been given to Principals and Director of these three Medical Colleges to apply fresh under 10A for the academic year 2021-22 before 31-05-2020.
The Financial Commissioner further said that the start of DNB Programme across the UT of Jammu and Kashmir will upgrade the quality of specialized and super specialized health care across the UT.
